The Golden Temple of Dambulla has five caves and 157 statues of the Lord Buddha. Through the many paintings on the ceilings and walls, indicate the artistic talent of ancient days.

The Rock and temple and the caves date from the first century B.C. The premises were declared by UNESCO as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1991 because of the history, archaeological and artistic implications.
