Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Earlier days Sigiriya was called ‘Sinhagiri’ (The Lion Rock) which was the royal citadel under the rule of king ‘Kashyapa’. This place is famous mainly for its defensive, architectural and irrigational technologies as well as for the sources of literature namely frescoes, graffiti songs and the pair of colossal lion’s paws carved into the bedrock. To reveal secrets of this world-famous fortress you will have to climb a lot of steps which ultimately be an exciting adventure.
Dambulla Cave Temple
The Golden Temple of Dambulla has five caves and 157 statues of the Lord Buddha. Through the many paintings on the ceilings and walls, indicate the artistic talent of ancient days. The Rock and temple and the caves date from the first century B.C. The premises were declared by UNESCO as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1991 because of the history, archaeological and artistic implications. This temple has a history of over 22 centuries and it holds a sense of benevolence and spirituality. Delicate paintings that cover the ceiling and walls, created with indigenous traditional paints give the beauty and visitors may climb up steps to the temple and the view from the top of the rock is as inspiring as the temple’s golden interior.
